VISUALIZE IT FIRST
“If you can’t see it, don’t hit it.”
-Deborah Graham
Visualizing a shot before you shoot may be the most overlooked concept in pool. It is essential that you see it and feel it before you shoot. As your mind creates a picture of your desired outcome, your body prepares to execute it.
There is some mystery to it, but there is no doubt your mind and body cooperate to bring about your vision.
Once you decide on the shot, create a clear picture of the outcome you desire. See the cue ball striking the ball exactly where you aim, watch the ball drop into the pocket, and see the cue ball get perfect position for your next shot.
Top professionals are superb at visualizing. They see the shot, feel it, and experience it all before they touch the cloth. On most shots, they don’t take more than a few seconds to complete it. It’s a quick process that is just one part of their shot routine.
A detailed mental picture also develops a feel for the shot and instills confidence. You’ve already performed it in your head. Now, do it on the table!
If Beethoven was able to compose his Ninth Symphony while completely deaf, it should be easy to visualize a successful shot. Go for it!
Visualize the shot and experience it before you actually shoot it.
