DEEP BREATHING
“I take deep breaths and exhale. I relax myself that way.”
-Laura Smith.”
Advanced platers know how to keep their composure when the heat is on. Somehow, they stay calm and relaxed in tough situations. While their mental training is highly developed, they also use an old–fashioned technique that is simple and accessible to everyone. In fact, it is so simple that it’s right under their noses. It’s called breathing.
Oxygen carries the life support for top performances. More importantly, breathing triggers a natural response that keeps the mind and body relaxed and calm.
When you feel anxious or nervous, take a couple of deep breaths. Let your diaphragm and lungs expand as you take in air, and feel the tension leave as you exhale. You’ll be amazed at how this simple process calms your emotions.
Controlled deep breathing is an age–old technique used in yoga, meditation, and the martial arts. There’s nothing new age about it. It’s simple and it works!
When you feel yourself tensing up, don’t go looking for a secret formula. What you need is right under your nose. Take a couple of deep breaths and relax. Your body will thank you, and you’ll be ready for your next shot.
Breathe. It’s the most relaxing thing you can do.
