Product FAQ

Custom Viking Cue: Can take 3 weeks or more (up to 12 weeks) depending on the amount of customization.

Viking cues are made differently than most other manufacturer’s cues. We rarely use metal or steel dowel pins to hold the wood pieces of a butt together. Instead, we utilize a more reliable, natural way of constructing the butts of our cues by finger jointing the wood pieces of a butt together. Finger jointing the pieces of the butt improves the structural integrity and playability while further assuring straightness. We season (condition) our wood over an extended period of time (18 to 24 months) in a climate-controlled environment to insure straightness. We offer more standard models at more price points than any other cue manufacturer. That means we are likely to have a cue that matches your personality and budget. The number of no-charge options (stain, wrap, and pearl colors) we offer is far greater than any other cue company. We encourage you to take advantage of all of the options we offer so you get a "customized" cue that meets your specifications.
The price of a Viking cue is determined by the intricacy of the design, the machinery involved in making the parts for the cue, the number of parts, the cost of the parts and materials, and the labor required to construct the cue.
Yes, but expect to pay a minimum of $1,000 as the process to go from concept to finished product is rather tedious and expensive. Computer (CAD/CAM) programming can be over $100 per hour. Materials and labor are also very expensive to make just one cue from a custom design. We are able to produce custom decals, please contact Viking for more information.

Cue Options

Yes, you can specify the weight and shaft diameter of your Viking cue. The standard weight range is 18 to 21oz. (in quarter-ounce increments) for no additional charge. The standard shaft diameter range is 11.75 to 13mm (in quarter-millimeter increments) for no extra charge.
We recommend you start with a 19 oz. cue and 13 mm shaft. These are the most common cue specifications. Can I get a longer or shorter Viking cue? Yes, you can specify up to 2 inches longer on the shaft and butt for a total of up to 4 inches over-length. We can make a cue as short as you want, but we recommend nothing shorter than 52 inches. Viking also offers additional joint and butt extension options.
Yes, for all Viking cues that come standard with an Irish linen wrap. You may choose from more than 28 wrap colors.
Yes, many models of Viking cues offer a leather wrap as standard and you may upgrade an Irish linen cue to Leather as well. We have several color/pattern options available. There is an additional charge for leather.

Yes, you may choose from Roman, Block, or Script font styles. We are able to engrave up to 20 alphanumeric characters (including spaces) per line on most cues. Additional charges apply for engraving.
Yes. Available colors are black, silver or white.

Materials & Construction

No. Each Viking cue, regardless of price, is subject to the same stringent quality control standards as it makes its way through our production process. There are over a dozen quality control checks in our process.
Yes, and we do not compromise quality or durability when grading wood. We grade wood based on cosmetic appearance.
Yes. Additional charges vary depending on the wood selected.
No. Other woods do not absorb the stain.
Stain is absorbed into the wood leaving the wood grain still visible. Paint is applied on the wood, and it is rare to be able to see the grain through the paint
No. We do not stain shafts because over time the stain will begin to wear off. Cue shafts also end up discolored from cloth, chalk, powder, dirt, and perspiration.
Yes. You may select any color stain that is available in our catalog. There may be additional charges.
In most cases, yes you can, on new cues only. You may select any color pearl that is available in our catalog. There may be additional charges.
The balance point is within 3/4 of an inch above or below the wrap on most Viking cues

Joints

Cue joint selection is a matter of personal preference. If possible, you should base such a selection on previous experience. If you are new to the game or have never owned a cue, your best bet is joint A or B. Joint D offers the best hit in terms of how closely it resembles the look, "feel," and "play" of a one-piece cue
No. We researched this over several years. The removal of all but about 4 to 6 threads from the male pin does not compromise the durability or strength of the joint because those additional threads are not needed
The Quick-Release Joint offers two major advantages. The first is speed. It takes roughly 5 turns to join the cue butt and shaft together. Strength is the second advantage of the Quick-Release joint, and the most important! You'll notice that the Quick-Release Joint is not fully threaded, which actually makes the connection between the shaft and cue butt stronger. When you insert the pin, you'll notice that it stabilizes the connection between the butt and shaft. As you start turning, you can feel that connection getting stronger. With a fully threaded joint, you match up the threads and start turning, resulting in lower tolerance and strength. Our Quick-Release Joint offers a very tight tolerance, of .0005" of an inch, resulting in a stronger connection between your cue butt and joint.

Shafts

Your Viking cue has a proprietary ferrule made in our factory in Madison, Wisconsin. Our ferrules are made from an extremely durable, high-impact plastic material that is resistant to cracking, chipping, and breaking.
Your standard Viking playing cue has a pro taper of 12 to 14 inches. Our break/jump shafts feature a conical taper.
Send your cue to our repair department. (Refer to the instructions on how to go about sending your cue in for repair in our Warranty & Repairs section.)
Absolutely. Viking has standard tips on each grade of shaft we offer. Upgraded tips are available from many leading manufacturers in addition to Viking’s own proprietary tips.

Viking Customer Care

All Viking factory discontinued products consist of products and cues that were originally sold new, or sent out as demo units, and then returned, sometimes without even being opened or chalked. Once these units get back to Viking from Authorized Retailers or consumers, they are tested and then reconditioned to original factory specifications by Viking factory-trained technicians. Out testing process assures that these cues will meet the same stringent quality standards that are required for new Viking cues.

Viking LTD cues are “limited edition” cues often comprised of prototypes or production variations of standard models. These cues are new and factory fresh.

Savvy buyers know that factory discontinued products can be a great value, since these items are usually priced 10 to 15 percent lower than comparable new product.
Yes. We are happy to offer customers of discontinued Viking Cues the same high-quality Viking Customer Care that comes with new Viking Cues.
All Viking Cues, including factory discontinued units are warranted, under Viking’s Lifetime Warranty. For details on our Lifetime Warranty.

All claims are resolved at the discretion of Viking Cues. Viking does not warranty its cues against any damage caused by third parties. This warranty is void if your Viking cue has after-market products or if it has been subject to mishandling, abuse, or worked on by an entity other than Viking Cues. Additional Warranty details can be found here.

Not at this time. Unfortunately the warranty is void if your Viking cue is repaired by an entity other than Viking Cue Manufacturing LLC.

We will do all we can to see that you have it back in time
It depends on the age and joint style of the cue. While we cannot guarantee the match of a new shaft without the butt, it is reasonable to expect that a new shaft will fit almost perfectly on any Viking cue with joints A, B, C, or D made after 1997. You must send the butt of your Viking cue in if it was manufactured prior to 1997 or any Viking cue with a double threaded joint or a 3/8 10 pin joint. It's always best to send the butt of your Viking cue in to us whenever possible so we can match the new shaft perfectly.
In some cases, a repair may require some modification to the joint. Therefore, it would be necessary to send your entire cue (butt and all existing shafts) to insure a proper match for each shaft prior to returning your cue.
No, as of April 1st, 2019 we discontinued the repair of other brands of cues.
You are responsible for all incoming and outgoing shipping charges for repairs.
No. Please do not send us cues with any ivory inlays or components. If you are unsure whether your cue has ivory in it, please check with a reputable antiques dealer in your area.

Care & Maintenance

All current Viking and Valhalla cues feature an adjustable weight-bolt system. You should return to your authorized Viking Cue dealer to have the weight adjusted in your cue. We do not recommend changing the weight yourself.
You should replace the tip as often as necessary so as to avoid any damage to the ferrule or when playability of the cue has changed. Do not let the curvature of the tip get down to the ferrule.
We suggest a tip scuffer for shaping and scuffing. The VikPik tool works well for preparing the tip to hold chalk better. Tip curvature should be similar to that of either a dime or nickel, depending on the personal preference. We have cue shapers available on our website for purchase.

Side pressure is any force exerted upon the cue from the side. Cues are made to withstand significant straight-line impact when the tip appropriately makes contact with the cue ball. Side pressure can result from a number of circumstances that include leaning your cue against walls, whipping the cue around, breaking with too much follow through, moving balls with the shaft, dropping it on the floor or slamming the cue down.

Obviously, there are other forms of side pressure. The result may not be immediate, nor will it result in immediate external damage, rather internal damage or fracture may occur. The interior fracture will then make its way to the surface of the cue when used in play, or if continuously exposed to side pressure. Damages as a result of any of the aforementioned forms of side pressure are not covered under warranty nor are any other circumstances of side pressure.

First and foremost, never loan your cue to anyone. No one will take care of your cue as well as you will. If you must lean your cue against a wall, do so at the slightest possible angle away from foot traffic. Obtain a cue holder. Lay your cue flat on the bed of the table. That will not only prevent any circumstance of side pressure, but it will also prevent your opponent from breaking until you are ready.
We recommend you store your Viking cue in a protective cue case at room temperature. Do not store your cue in a rack in the basement. Do not leave your cue in your car in the hot sun or cold weather. As a general rule of thumb, if you are not using your cue, store it in a cue case and tuck it away under your bed or in a closet, but never in your car or basement. Your cue is made of wood, and it will react to the weather and elements. That's why we highly recommend keeping it in a case where it is not exposed to temperature and environmental changes, especially rapid ones.
Yes. Using a piece of a brown paper bag works well if you need to smooth your Viking cue shaft in a hurry and don't have access to anything else. We caution against using regular sandpaper unless it has a very fine grit (600 and up). Sandpaper can remove the original finish or sealant and reduce the diameter of the shaft if sanded too much. Using 000 steel wool works fine too, but be careful not to overuse it.
Yes. Read the instructions carefully to avoid any potential damage to your Viking Cue.
Since the inception of our proprietary ferrule material in 1996, Viking has not needed to repair one cracked ferrule. If you think your ferrule may be cracked, take some 400-600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the area where you believe it to be cracked. Viking guarantees it is only scratched and will sand out.
